Have you heard the latest smear tactic from the McCain/Palin/Fox News campaign team? You know, that one about Barack Obama being a so called "socialist." Guess what, it doesn't have anymore truth do it then their other smears like that Obama "pals around with terrorists."
It's important to realize that the entire basis of this "socialist" smear is that Obama want's to allow the Bush tax cuts for the very rich to expire. The very same tax cuts that McCain voted against in 2001 and 2003.
The entire argument centers on the idea that Obama's tax plan which calls for tax cuts for the majority of Americans and raising taxes on the very rich is somehow something very different and very new for America. This is not true. America has had a progressive tax code for a very long time. As has every other Western country. There is nothing new about a progressive tax code.
Furthermore every tax "redistributes" wealth. That's the very nature of taxes. Unless John McCain is for no taxes at all (and how could he pay for his wars without taxes?) then McCain is also a "redistributer."
Are you beginning to see just how ridiculous this "socialist" smear really is? It's a complete distortion of reality. They know that. What they are hoping for is that the average American voter is too stupid to realize they are being lied to (again.)
To make even more clear how stupid the socialist attack is consider this: Obama's proposed tax code would include lower taxes on the rich than there were during most of Ronald Reagan's Presidency. Do you think the rich were hurting in the 1980s? Do you think that Ronald Reagan is a socialist too?
By the McCain/Palin definition everyone (this side of Ron Paul) is a socialist. It's an absolutely dishonest and meaningless attack.
Another important point is that America does have socialist programs. Programs like Social Security & Medicare. And guess what, when these programs were introduced those on the right (Republicans) derided these programs as "socialist." How have they worked out? Would you like Social Security & Medicare to be done away with? How about Public Education? Isn't that socialist too? How about police departments? How about firemen? There are a lot of things about America that are "socialist" and guess what, most people rely on those socialist institutions in some way or another.
The dishonesty of this attack only proves once again how similar a McCain/Palin admin. would be to a Bush/Cheney admin. Not only are they exactly the same on all of the important issues but they tell the same kind of lies.

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)Dear Mr. Markus: thank you for this fine article. I enjoyed this very much. I'm going for early voting today, and I am casting my vote for Obama. In fact, Obama is the first Presidential candidate I have ever given money to as a campaign contribution. I just got a job, after being unemployed for 5 months, and I start November 5th. Even being unemployed I felt so strongly that this guy was special, that I contributed $60 and bought a $15 Obama baseball cap. You keep writing. I loved this one.tex
